Lifestyle-Diseases-And-How-They-Affect-You

You may have heard of the term floating around- But what are they? And should you be worried?

Let’s keep this simple- Lifestyle diseases include any illnesses that occur due to certain wrong habits that occur daily that then turn into diseases like- Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, GERD, fatty liver, arthritis, stroke, obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, PCOS and other hormonal imbalances, and many more! All of these hinder your daily functioning and your path to a healthy mind and body unless you actively manage and cure them.
Today, we’ll talk about some of the most common ones, and why they happen!

  1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

GERD is a chronic digestive disease in which stomach acid or bile irritates the food pipe lining. With GERD, acid reflux occurs and most of the times causes esophageal ulcers, bleeding, pain, and difficulty swallowing. It can be caused by inattention to meals, if you have been eating your meals at the wrong times, or going without eating for hours on end.

All of these result in your body not allowing you to take in more food, which causes extreme acid reflux.

2. Type 2 Diabetes

This is another chronic disease in which the body fails to utilize insulin the way it should. The health of a person starts to decline as the cells in the body do not utilize the energy from glucose leading a person to always feeling lethargic, with low energy and stamina levels, excessive thirst, and frequent urination. All of these symptoms lead to irritation and mood swings and that can escalate if not identified soon. It can have adverse effects to the functioning of the eyes, heart, and nerves and can even cause elephantiasis, which is swelling in the legs that makes it hard to walk.

3. Hypertension

Hypertension is also commonly referred to as having high blood pressure. This is when the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high. Lifestyles that are high in stress, low in regular exercise, and less focus on a healthy diet are causes of hypertension.

It’s symptoms include chest pain, memory loss, personality changes, trouble concentrating, irritability, damage to arteries by making them less elastic, decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to your heart, and extreme reactions to stressful events.

4. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS, also called PCOD (Polycystic ovary disorder) is a hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts on the outer edges which is caused by a mixture of genetic and lifestyle factors.

PCOS is extremely common in India, with 6 out of every 10 women experiencing it. Although so many women have it, the majority of them do not even realize it, attributing it to just painful or irregular periods. Thus, it is important to look out for signs of PCOS, and get a treatment plan in place. PCOS causes irregular periods, painful periods, mood swings, insulin resistance, tummy fat, hormonal acne, and unwanted facial hair. If not treated and left as is, it can also cause type 2 diabetes.
